Interview guide Self introduction for interview
Self introduction for interview: samples for freshers and experienced
By Manideep · Updated 26 October 2026 · 9 min read
A self introduction in an interview is a summary of who you are in about ninety seconds, in a set order: a greeting, your name and where you are from, your education, your projects or experience, two or three skills, and what you want next, ending with a thank-you. When an interviewer in India says "introduce yourself", this is the order they expect, so following it makes you sound prepared before you have said anything clever.
Below is the format with timings, a fill-in template, sample introductions for freshers and experienced candidates, a thirty-second version for walk-in drives, a sample in Hindi, and the details worth leaving out. Every sample is written to be said out loud, so read them aloud too.
Self introduction or "tell me about yourself": the difference
The two questions overlap, and many interviewers use them interchangeably. When the wording is "introduce yourself", especially in campus placements, HR rounds and walk-in drives, interviewers usually expect the fuller, ordered introduction below, including your education and a brief personal line. When the wording is "tell me about yourself", lead with what makes you right for this job and keep the background short; our guide to tell me about yourself covers that version.
Either way, the same rules hold: under two minutes, nothing you cannot be questioned on, and a clear last line.
The self introduction format, in order
| Part | What to say | Time |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Greeting | A short greeting and thanks: "Good morning, and thank you for having me." | 5 seconds |
| 2. Name and place | Your name and where you are from, in one line. | 5 seconds |
| 3. Education | Your highest degree, college and year, and your score if it is good. | 10–15 seconds |
| 4. Projects or experience | One or two things you did, what your part was, and what changed. | 30–40 seconds |
| 5. Skills | Two or three skills the job asks for, each with where you used it. | 10–15 seconds |
| 6. A personal line | One interest or strength, only if it says something useful about you. | 5–10 seconds |
| 7. Goal and closing | What you want next, why this role, and thank you. | 10 seconds |
That adds up to about ninety seconds. If you need to cut, cut from the middle, never the end: the closing line is what tells the interviewer you have finished and hands the conversation back.
Part 4 carries the most weight. A fresher's project with one real result says more than a list of five subjects, and an experienced candidate's single achievement with a number says more than a list of responsibilities.
A fill-in template

Sample self introduction for a fresher (B.Tech, IT role)
Good morning, and thank you for having me.
My name is Rohan Verma, and I am from Indore. I am in the final year of my B.Tech in computer science at a college in Bhopal, with a CGPA of 8.1 so far.
For my final-year project, I built an attendance system for our college that uses QR codes instead of paper registers. I wrote the backend in Python with Django, and it is now used in three departments. I also did a six-week internship where I fixed bugs in a web application and wrote unit tests for it.
My main skills are Python and SQL, which I used throughout that project, and I am comfortable working in a team, because the project was built by four of us and I coordinated the work.
Outside academics, I solve problems on coding practice sites most evenings, which keeps my basics sharp.
I am looking for a role where I can work on real software for clients from the start, which is why I applied here. Thank you.
Notice what it leaves out: school marks, every course, every certificate. They are on the resume if the interviewer wants them.
Sample self introduction for a fresher (B.Com, non-technical role)
Good morning. Thank you for this opportunity.
I am Sneha Kulkarni, from Nashik. I completed my B.Com this year from Pune University with 78 percent.
While studying, I worked part-time for a year at a chartered accountant's office, where I entered GST invoices for about forty small businesses and prepared their monthly bank reconciliations. It taught me to be careful with numbers and to meet filing dates without reminders.
I am good with Tally and Excel, and I can explain accounts to clients who are not from a finance background, which I did often at that office.
I enjoy reading about personal finance and I write short explainers on it for my friends.
I would like to build a career in accounts and finance operations, and this role is the right first step for that. Thank you.
Sample self introduction for an MBA fresher
Good morning, and thank you for having me.
My name is Aditya Rao, and I am from Hyderabad. I have just completed my MBA in marketing, and before that I did my B.Sc and worked for two years in inside sales at an edtech company.
In that job I handled about sixty leads a day and was among the top five on my team for conversions in my second year. During my MBA, my summer internship was with a consumer goods company, where I studied why a new snack was selling poorly in two cities, and my recommendation on pack sizes was taken up by the regional team.
My strengths are understanding customers and working with data, and I use Excel and basic SQL comfortably.
I play cricket for a local club on weekends.
I am looking for a brand or sales management role where I can use both my sales experience and my MBA, and that is why I applied for this position. Thank you.
Sample self introduction for an experienced candidate
With experience, cut the education to one line and spend the time on one achievement that matches the job.
Good morning, and thank you for having me.
I am Karthik, and I am from Chennai. I am a software test engineer with three years of experience, currently at an IT services company, where I test a banking application for a client in Europe. I did my B.E. in electronics before moving into testing.
When I joined the project, almost all testing was manual and a full regression took four days. I wrote an automated test suite in Selenium with Java for the most used flows, and regression now takes under a day, which lets the team release every two weeks instead of every month.
My main skills are test automation, API testing with Postman, and writing clear bug reports that developers can act on quickly.
I am now looking for a role where I can take more ownership of test strategy, which is what this position offers. Thank you.
A thirty-second version for walk-in drives and group rounds
In a walk-in drive or a group discussion round, you may get thirty seconds in front of a panel or a room. Keep the order and drop everything except one fact per part.
Good morning. I am Meera Joshi from Jaipur. I completed my BCA this year with 82 percent. In my final year I built a small inventory app for my uncle's hardware shop, which he still uses every day. My strongest skills are Java and SQL. I am looking for a developer role where I can keep learning on real projects. Thank you.
Self introduction in Hindi
If the interview is in Hindi, use the same order. Keep technical words in English where that is how you would naturally say them.

What to leave out
- "Myself Rohan." Say "My name is Rohan" or "I am Rohan". It is a small thing, but interviewers notice it in the first five seconds.
- Your parents' professions in detail. One line about family is fine if it comes naturally; a minute about it takes time from your projects.
- School marks, unless you are a fresher with nothing stronger, and even then in a few words.
- Every certificate and online course. Name only the one that matters for this job.
- Hobbies you cannot talk about for two minutes. "Reading" invites "What are you reading now?"
- "As you can see in my resume." Tell them what the resume does not say.
- Salary, notice period or reasons for leaving. Those come later, when they ask.
How to say it well
- Learn the order and the facts, not the sentences. A word-for-word introduction sounds recited, and one forgotten line can throw you.
- Say it aloud with a timer. If it runs past two minutes, cut from the projects or skills, not the closing line.
- Pause briefly after your name and after your education. Pauses sound confident; rushing sounds nervous.
- In a video interview, look at the camera rather than the screen when you start and when you finish.
- Expect follow-up questions on everything you mention, and prepare the project you lead with using the STAR method.
The introduction usually opens an HR round. The questions that tend to follow are why should we hire you, why do you want to join our company and the rest of the common HR interview questions.
A few more answers
Frequently asked questions
How long should a self introduction be in an interview?
About one to two minutes, which is roughly 150 to 250 words at a normal speaking pace. In a walk-in drive or a group round, where many candidates speak, keep it to about thirty seconds.
Should I include family details in my self introduction?
Keep it to one line at most, such as where you live and with whom, and only if it feels natural. Interviewers in India sometimes ask about family as a follow-up, so you do not need to cover it in your introduction. Experienced candidates can usually leave it out entirely.
How should I start my self introduction?
With a short greeting and thanks, then your name: "Good morning, and thank you for having me. My name is…". Avoid "Myself…" as an opening, and do not start with your school.
Should I mention my percentage or CGPA?
If you are a fresher and your score is good, mention it once with your degree. If it is low, leave it out and let your project or internship carry the introduction. Experienced candidates rarely need to mention marks.
What is the difference between a self introduction and "tell me about yourself"?
A self introduction usually follows a fixed order, with education and a brief personal line. "Tell me about yourself" is closer to a pitch for why you fit the job. Both should stay under two minutes and end with a clear last line.
Can I give my self introduction in Hindi?
Yes, if the interview is in Hindi or the interviewer switches to it. Use the same order, and keep technical terms in English where that is how you would naturally say them.
