TCS interview questions and answers: the process, rounds and walk-in drives

By Manideep · Updated 21 October 2026 · 8 min read

TCS interview questions fall into three rounds after the online test: a technical interview on programming, your project and computer science basics; a managerial round on how you handle situations and whether you will fit; and an HR round on your background, relocation and joining. For freshers, the TCS National Qualifier Test (NQT) comes first and decides which interviews, and which roles, you are considered for.

This guide covers the process as it is commonly reported by recent candidates, the questions asked in each round with sample answers, and what to expect at a TCS walk-in interview for experienced roles. TCS changes its process from year to year, so always check the details in your invitation and on TCS's official careers pages.

The TCS hiring process at a glance

StageWhat happens
RegistrationFreshers apply through TCS's careers portal for the NQT; experienced candidates apply to openings or walk-in drives.
TCS NQT (online test)Aptitude, reasoning and verbal sections, plus an advanced section with coding. Your score decides which role interviews you are shortlisted for.
Technical interviewProgramming, data structures, databases, your final-year project and the technologies on your resume.
Managerial interviewSituations, teamwork, decision-making, flexibility on location and shifts.
HR interviewBackground, communication, relocation, documents and joining.

In many drives the three interviews happen in one sitting, sometimes with two or three interviewers on the same panel, so the line between technical, managerial and HR questions can blur.

The TCS NQT and the Ninja, Digital and Prime roles

The NQT is commonly reported to have a foundation section (numerical ability, verbal ability and reasoning) and an advanced section (harder quantitative and reasoning questions, plus coding). Candidates who do well only in the foundation section are usually considered for the Ninja role; strong performance in the advanced section, especially coding, opens interviews for the Digital and Prime roles.

Two things candidates consistently report helping: attempting the advanced section even if you are aiming for Ninja, and submitting a partial coding solution rather than nothing, since solutions that pass some test cases can still count.

  • Numerical ability: percentages, ratios, time and work, profit and loss, data interpretation.
  • Verbal ability: reading comprehension, sentence completion, error spotting.
  • Reasoning: series, coding and decoding, seating arrangements, syllogisms.
  • Coding: typically array and string problems, at easy to medium difficulty, in a language of your choice.

TCS technical interview questions with answers

Explain your final-year project.

Expect this first, and expect follow-ups on every part you mention. Cover the problem, your role, the technology, one difficulty and the result, in about a minute.

Sample: "We built an attendance system using face recognition. I handled the backend in Python with Flask and a MySQL database. The hardest part was poor lighting in classrooms, which we improved by adding more training images per student. It reached about 92% accuracy in our tests."

What are the four pillars of object-oriented programming?

Encapsulation (keeping data and the methods that use it together, and hiding internal details), abstraction (exposing only what is needed), inheritance (a class reusing another class's properties) and polymorphism (one interface, many implementations, such as method overloading and overriding). Give one example of each from a language you know.

What is the difference between a process and a thread?

A process is a running program with its own memory space. A thread is a unit of execution inside a process; threads of the same process share its memory. Threads are lighter to create and switch between, but shared memory means they need synchronisation.

What is normalisation in databases?

Organising tables to reduce duplicate data and avoid update problems. First normal form removes repeating groups, second removes partial dependency on a composite key, and third removes transitive dependency, so every non-key column depends only on the key.

Write a SQL query to find the second-highest salary.

One common answer: SELECT MAX(salary) FROM employees WHERE salary < (SELECT MAX(salary) FROM employees); Mention that DENSE_RANK() also works and handles ties more flexibly.

Write a program to reverse a string, or to check whether it is a palindrome.

Explain your approach before you code: two pointers, one at each end, swapping or comparing as they move towards the middle. It runs in O(n) time and O(1) extra space for an in-place reversal. Then write it cleanly in the language you chose for the test.

What is the difference between an array and a linked list?

An array stores elements next to each other in memory, so access by index is O(1) but inserting in the middle is O(n). A linked list stores nodes connected by pointers, so insertion is O(1) once you have the position, but access by index is O(n).

What is cloud computing?

Using computing resources such as servers, storage and databases over the internet, paying for what you use instead of owning the hardware. Mention the service models, IaaS, PaaS and SaaS, with an example of each.

If coding rounds are your weak spot, practise explaining your approach out loud before writing code: interviewers mark the explanation as well as the result. Our AI coding interview assistant page shows how ClearMyRound handles live coding rounds.

TCS managerial round questions

Why do you want to join TCS?

Be specific: the range of clients and domains, the training programme, or a particular area such as cloud or AI. Sample: "TCS works across banking, retail and manufacturing, so I can learn how large systems are built in several industries early in my career, and the initial training means I start on solid ground."

Are you willing to relocate and work in shifts?

TCS places people across many cities and some projects follow client time zones. Answer honestly; if yes, say so clearly. If you have a real constraint, mention it now rather than after an offer.

Tell me about a time you handled pressure.

Use the STAR method: a real deadline, what you did, and the result. Keep the situation short and spend most of the answer on your actions.

If a client asked for a change at the last minute, what would you do?

Show judgement rather than a yes or no: understand exactly what they need and why, assess the impact on the deadline, tell your lead immediately, and agree on what can be delivered now and what follows. The managerial round is testing whether you escalate sensibly.

TCS HR interview questions

Tell me about yourself.

A one-minute answer: your degree, one project or internship that matters, and why TCS. See our full guide to tell me about yourself.

What are your strengths and weaknesses?

One strength with proof, and a real weakness you are working on. The HR interview questions guide has model answers.

Do you have any backlogs or gaps in your education?

Answer honestly and briefly, with what you did about it. Eligibility rules on backlogs and gaps are set for each drive, so check them before you apply.

Do you have any questions for us?

Ask about the work, such as the training you will receive or the kind of projects freshers join first.

TCS walk-in interviews for experienced roles

TCS regularly runs walk-in drives for experienced professionals in specific skills, such as Java, testing, SAP or cloud, at its offices in different cities. They are announced on TCS's careers pages and its official social media, usually with the skills, experience range, date and venue.

Only go to a walk-in for a role that matches your skills and experience; the interview will be on those skills. Many drives also ask you to register on TCS's careers portal before the day and bring your reference ID.

  • Bring several printed copies of your updated resume.
  • Carry a government photo ID and the documents the announcement lists, such as education certificates and recent payslips, plus passport photos.
  • Expect registration, then a technical interview on the advertised skill, and sometimes a managerial or HR discussion the same day.
  • Know your current and expected salary, and your notice period.
  • Prepare to discuss your current project in detail: the architecture, your exact role, and a problem you solved.
  • Plan for a long day. Walk-ins can involve waiting between rounds.

Be wary of anyone asking for money to arrange a TCS interview or offer. Genuine drives are announced through TCS's own channels.

How to prepare for a TCS interview

  1. Practise aptitude and reasoning with timed mock tests for the NQT, two or three a week.
  2. Solve 30 to 50 easy and medium coding problems on arrays and strings, in the language you will use in the test.
  3. Revise OOP, DBMS, operating systems and computer networks basics.
  4. Prepare to explain your project for five minutes, including what you would do differently.
  5. Prepare short, honest answers to the HR and managerial questions above, and say them aloud.

Run through the whole interview at least once with someone asking follow-up questions, or with an AI mock interview built from your resume and the TCS job description.
